SADC-GMI IMPLEMENTS SUB-GRANTS PROJECTS IN SADC MEMBER STATES
The Sustainable Groundwater Management in SADC Member States project Phase 2 includes Component 3, which focuses on Building Resilient Livelihoods and Inclusive Groundwater Management. This component involves awarding small grants to Member States for pilot projects. The grants are divided into basic and competitive categories based on the level of innovation demonstrated in project proposals.
As of now, 12 Member States have submitted concept notes and proposals for the Basic Grant, and projects are at various stages of implementation. Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have all participated. Some Member States, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, and Zambia, were awarded the competitive grant for innovative projects.
Several specific projects are underway, including the Caimbambo Water Supply Project in Angola, the Mandimba City Drinking Water Supply Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and efforts in Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, and Namibia. These projects involve activities like drilling boreholes, installing water supply systems, and implementing monitoring initiatives to enhance groundwater management.
In summary, the Sustainable Groundwater Management project in SADC Member States is supporting various initiatives across the region to improve water supply, enhance groundwater monitoring, and promote sustainable groundwater use for the benefit of local communities.
