Phase 2 of international groundwater management in the Southern African Development Community
With financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and Cooperation in International Waters in Africa (CIWA), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) – Groundwater Management Institute (SADC-GMI) is actively executing innovative and impactful initiatives to bolster sustainable groundwater management resources in the SADC region. Currently in Phase 2, the Sustainable Groundwater Management in SADC Member States project addresses the outcomes of a 2019 regional analysis highlighting deficiencies in capacity development, knowledge management, and the utilization of groundwater to enhance resilient livelihoods across the region. The project strategically targets these gaps through three key components: Capacity Development, Knowledge Management, and Building Resilient Livelihoods.
Since its commencement in November 2021, the project has demonstrated commendable progress in implementation. Multiple initiatives supporting sustainable groundwater development are underway, reaching various stages of execution across several Member States and aligning with the project’s three main components.
