SIWI World Water Week: August 23-27 – What You Need to Know
EVENT OVERVIEW
The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) will host its annual World Water Week conference on August 23-27, 2021. SIWI has been organizing the World Water Week and, for the past 30 years, the event has been regarded as the most influential platform on water issues globally.
While the conference is usually hosted in person in Stockholm, Sweden, featuring more than 4,000 attendees from 135 countries, this year, the conference will be held as an interactive digital event due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. This year’s overarching theme, “Building Resilience Faster,” sets a forward-looking tone as water specialists and other professionals convene online to discuss current scenarios and identify solutions to the most pressing water-related challenges – water scarcity, climate policy, poverty, and much more.
CONFERENCE SCHEDULE, FEATURES, AND REGISTRATION
For this year’s conference, SIWI has designed a highly interactive and socially engaging conference. Here is the full conference schedule of 300 sessions . Eng. James Sauramba, Executive Director of the SADC-Groundwater Management Institute will actively participate and engage in three sessions during the World Water Week. He will provide the Southern African Development Community perspective on the issues that will be under discussion during the sessions.
1. Session title: Transboundary Waters Cooperation for Resilience: Global Lessons and Experiences
Date and time: August 23, 2021 (Monday) 18:00 – 19:00
Session Description: Transboundary water cooperation offers much more than just water management, it is a platform for multi-sector planning and coordination of resilience interventions. This session sheds light on the role of transboundary water cooperation to unlock resilience across sectors, social groups and countries, under a changing climate. The session is convened by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, UK, Government of the Netherlands, United Nations Economic Commission of Europe. 2. Session title: Improving the livelihoods of the poor to build climate resilience
Date and time: August 26, 2021 (Thursday) 14:00 – 15:00
Session Description: The session will showcase the work of Climate Resilient Infrastructure Development Facility (CRIDF) and partners in the development, funding and implementation of livelihoods programmes to build climate resilience faster for the poor across Southern Africa. This will be achieved through a combination of presentations, videos, a panel discussion and a facilitated engagement with the audience. The session is convened by CRIDF, SIWI, The Nature Conservancy, The Permanent Okavango River Basin Water Commission and Zambezi Watercourse Commission. Session Description:To tackle increasing drought challenges in Southern Africa, the World Bank and the Cooperation in International Waters in Africa (CIWA) recently launched the multi-sector Southern Africa Drought Resilience Initiative (SADRI). This session will detail SADRI’s approach and include discussion on how to target regional investments for increasing drought resilience. The session is convened by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), World Bank Group and United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. Additionally, SADC-GMI will run an online campaign in support of the World Water Week. The campaign will showcase the work the SADC-GMI has accomplished which is aligned to the World Water Week theme “Building Resilience Faster”.
