SADC-GMI RECEIVES GLOBAL RECOGNITION AT THE 50TH IAH CONGRESS
After 6 years of operation and consistent contribution towards sustainable and equitable groundwater management in the SADC region, SADC-GMI finally receives a global recognition. During the 50th IAH Congress Eng. James Sauramba, SADC-GMI Executive Director was presented with the Distinguished Associate Award of the International Association of Hydrogeologists for the outstanding contribution to the understanding, development, management, and protection of groundwater resources internationally
This award comes after 6 years of SADC-GMI cementing and solidifying its brand as the Centre of Excellence in sustainable groundwater Management in the SADC region. In a bid to fulfill its mandate of promoting sustainable groundwater management and provide solutions to groundwater challenges in the SADC region, SADCGMI has implemented a spectrum of innovative and impactful projects helping Member States to be more climate resilient. Over the past years SADC-GMI has provided solutions to groundwater challenges through creating an enabling policy, legal and regulatory environment, capacity development, advancing research, supporting groundwater infrastructure, and providing access to groundwater information to the SADC region. Groundwater is increasingly becoming the primary source of water for many particularly in rural areas, and it directly impacts well-being, livestock, and productivity of subsistence farming.
Through James’ sterling leadership as the Executive Director, SADCGMI has been able to champion initiatives that have made an impact on human well-being, livelihoods, food security, ecosystems natural habitats, industries and growing cities that are reliant on groundwater. Congratulations to James Sauramba, SADC-GMI team and collaborating partners for making such impact and be recognized at a global level for their contribution. James says this award is a testament to the SADC-GMI’s hard work and commitment to the sustainable groundwater management and enhancing water security in the region.
