Project background
The SADC Groundwater Management Institute (SADC-GMI) initiated a project to update the SADC Groundwater Literature Archive (SADC-GLA), to make it a fully functional online archive of groundwater literature for the SADC region. The project which was implemented by the British Geological Survey (BGS) and the International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC), started in February 2020, and ended in October 2020. As the result of the project, the platform was updated and now it consists of 4530 records that have been made available to the users.
As part of the Sustainable Groundwater Management in SADC Member States Project Phase 2, SADC-GMI is now embarking on the enhancement of the Grey Literature Archive project which is aimed at updating the platform with the relevant records, providing comprehensive and easily accessible resources for users in the SADC region and beyond.
Through the previous intervention, a range of mainly unpublished “grey data” reports, papers, manuals and maps describing hydrogeological work undertaken within countries in the SADC region during the 20th Century have been made available to download free of charge. These reports can inform wealth creation in the SADC region by providing valuable and much needed information on groundwater development and
Capacity building
As part of the capacity development of young professionals in the region, SADC-GMI has entered a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Botswana, Mzuzu University (Malawi) and University of Namibia. These universities will provide students will collect data and update the platform on behalf of SADC-GMI.
